Louis Vuitton 2012 Men’s Kanga Collection

    03. July 2011

Louis Vuitton seems to be obsessed with Kenya’s Maasai. The obsession began with the borrowing of the Maasa’s vibrant beads; now the highly acclaimed fashion house has borrowed the Kenyan ethic group’s plaid print for their 2012 Resort menswear collection.

According to the New York Times, Louis Vuitton’s style director; Kim Jones spent part of his childhood in Africa and stated that he drew most of his style inspiration from the content. This explains why the Masaai influence has been greatly used by the luxury wear producers of late.

This is however not the first time for the fashion house to draw its style influence from Africa. In 2007 Louis Vuitton used a checkered bag as a prop which was borrowed from Ghana. Last year the fashion house launched their core values campaign and released a luxury bag featuring a charm made by a Kenyan local artisan; guided by MADE.

The design house launched a spring collection in 2009 which was likened to Josephine Barker African razzmatazz by a Vogue reviewer

Louis Vuitton is not the only fashion house borrowing the African aesthetic; Noir jewelry launched a collection of necklaces which evoked the Maasai neck pieces. The pieces were so popular that Solange Knowles and Kelis adorned the pieces proudly to show their support for the African heritage.

Is this the beginning of a permanent series of African inspired designer wear? Only time will tell if designers will pick up African aesthetics for their pieces in the future.  As for Louis Vuitton and the Kanga collection, the question on whether men on the street will take up the trend is left answered.

A Retrospect Into Princess Diana’s Fashion Statement

    02. July 2011

Diana and Kate in similar evening gowns (Photo: stylistaontheblock.onsugar.com)

Diana turned 50 on July 1st 2011; at least in our minds she did. The memory of the charitable and fashionable Diana has been strong in our memories of late, channeled through Kate Middleton and Prince William’s recent wedding. Diana is remembered for a number of things among them is her effortless fashion statement like wise rekindled through Kate Middleton. Here is a retrospect into the beloved fashion icon’s chic style.

Diana always got the public’s attention, not only for her charm and charitable work, but also for the fashion statements she made. She would always step out in the most gorgeous hats, suits, dresses and gowns. It is no wonder that there are countless of photos documenting her glamorous trend;  owing to the fact she was one of the world’s most photographed women.

The truth be told; Diana did not always get it right in the beginning. London papers in 1982 – 1990 always placed her on the worst dressed lists. During this time she wore little or no makeup and dressed in a less refined way. The fashion industry criticized her for dressing too old while she should have been showing off her youth in beautiful garments.  But the princess picked up fashion trends, slowly but surely, raising her profile to an  international icon in global fashion. Anna Harvey, the deputy editor of Vogue magazine, played a crucial role in advising Diana through her style transformation. This did not however stop Diana from following her interests and fashion inclinations.

Diana was known to dress aptly in line with different occasions. For instance when meeting the Japanese Emperor she wore a Yuki dress and Escada coats when she visited Germany. During the course of her charitable work her dressing sense reflected the care and thought which she accorded the work she did.

Varsace, Galliano and Valentino as well as a number of other top designers dressed the fashion icon following her divorce. Her profile was further raised in the international fashion scene which made her a trend setter. Her trend setting seems to have remained relevant up to date, largely seen through Kate Middleton’s fashion inclinations. Kate’s style is so much like Diana’s which has seen her grace several best dressed lists since 2006.

The legendary princess stays in our heart and in our mind with how she moved the world as well as the great fashion statements she made.

Let Your Lips Do The Talking with This Season’s Hot Lip Colors

    02. July 2011

Tattooed lips are hot this season (Photo:ifashion.co.za)

The lips can be the most sensuous part of the body if given the right treatment and attention. Choosing the wrong lip color gets women the wrong kind of attention; the color you use on your lips should make them pop out and get you noticed. Here are a couple of tips on how to choose the right lip color, what hot colors work for this season and how let your lips do the talking.

Keep it sweet and simple; heavy lipstick creates a messed up look which indicates that it is time to change your lipstick brand. Lipstick which does not stay on for long or can’t create the look you desire must be cheap or not the right brand for you. Your skin tone should guide you in choosing the right lip color. There are no written rules when it comes to selecting the right lip color however the general rule is to keep away from it if it does not look good.

When shopping for the right lip color; test lipsticks on the outer skin of your thumb or wrist. This is out of convenience and to help you get a clear indication of how the color will look on your lips. Select the color which is appealing to you and flatters your skin tone as well. Go a little wild and go for bolder lip colors which work well for a night out or to create certain looks for special occasions.

Tattooed lips are catching on in various parts of the world and the look can work well if applied as it should. This lip color trend is for the daring women who are not afraid to stand out and let their lips speak out for their personality. Glitz lip colors in royal purple and hot pink are the leading lip colors for this season. The more daring women can go for glitz blue and those who want to underplay the glitz effects can go for glitz brown.

Good overall makeup and a good hair do go a long way in bringing out the popping effect of your lips.

To Wig It Or Not; That Is The Question

    01. July 2011

    Wavy temperament wig (Photo: amiclubwear.com)

Wigs have been in existence since time immemorial and are were popularly worn by members of the legal fraternity. These hair pieces made their way into people’s closets; to hide baldness. Wigs are now accepted by most people for cosmetic use. The question still stands; to wig it or not to wig it?

Cher and Dolly Parton are some of the celebrities responsible for popularizing wigs in history. Cher in particular uses wigs as part of her signature costume and has worn all kinds of wigs over the last 40 years.

There are however people who have to wear wigs out of necessity. Alopecia is a condition which causes hair loss.  When women experience alopecia most turn to wigs to try and cover up the condition.  Bald men have also been known to wear toupees; which are forms of wigs worn to cover up bald spots.

Currently wigs are commercially produced in bulk to serve the growing cosmetic industry needs.  A number of people are more willing to try out these hair pieces because of the convenience and benefits they provide. You can wear long hair on one day and short hair the next day; wigs can change your look in a matter of seconds. Don’t forget that wigs are the number one solution to cover up bad hair days. They provide an opportunity to transform your look without actually changing your natural hair. One of the main reasons why wigs have gained great popularity is because they do not cause damage to the hair compared to weaves and other hair replacements available in the market.

Unlike in the past when wigs were made out of horse hair; wigs are now manufactured using high quality human hair which is shaped into an assortment of styles and cuts. Lace front wigs are the latest craze in wig trends. It is hard to detect that they are wigs and are available in different lengths, cuts and hair temperaments.

Wigs are great investments for women who want to have a permanent solution for bad hair days and to effortlessly transform their look within seconds.

The line features more feminine dresses which are perfect for the summer. The femininity of the line has been attributed to the fact that Victoria may be expecting a girl. However a teen cartoon character, Emily the Strange, was the main inspiration for the collection.

Women of all shapes and sizes are welcome to buy any item from the collection which has been designed to cut across all body sizes. The dresses are structured and less clingy silhouette compared to other dresses in her main lines. Men’s disastrous Fashion Trends

    29. June 2011

Despite men maintaining the notion that they do not care much about fashion; you only need to look closer into a man’s closet to figure out if they are fashion inclined.

Men in great looking Bermuda shorts

Cargo and Capri pants may be in but substituting them with rugged old short pants is a big fashion disaster.
More men now own up to being fashion enthusiasts and seek sound advice in relation to fashion trends. Clothes are meant to be worn and they should fit well. Trousers which are too short should have no place within a man’s wardrobe.

Capri pants on the other hand should only be worn by men who have the legs for them. Yes, men also need to have shapely legs in order to pull off certain trends. Otherwise Capri pants should also be reasonable in length.

There are men who carry their clothes as opposed to wearing them. Cardigans tied around the waist have never been flattering to either men or women. If you are not going to wear it; leave it at home.

Suspenders work for only a few men. (Photo: revampvintage.com)

Backpacks should be left to school going boys. Men of a certain age should never be seen walking around with backpacks, unless they are from a camping or backpacking trip.
The man bag may not be every man’s cup of tea; there are good selections of bags suitable for men which work much better than back packs.

Suspenders and high waist pants may have been the trendiest fashion back in the 20s but they are long outdated fashion trends for men.

There are exceptions to this of cause, but a man who knows that he cannot pull the look should not dare walk out of the house wearing them.

Last but not least good grooming helps to bring together an entire look. Hair should be cut appropriately, nails should be short and unsightly toenails should be kept away from public view.

Reversing these fashion disasters can help men keep up with current fashion trends.
