On wife Miranda Lambert taming the “bad boy” in him: “I think she has probably tamed me a bit. Or maybe it’s because I’m 35, and you start to calm down anyway. But I think a lot of it has to do with feeling settled and lucky to have ended up with the person I really wanted to be with. To me, that’s being tamed in the best possible way. You just say to yourself, ‘I’m done, I’m thrilled, I couldn’t be any happier.’ Miranda would never want to tame me into being somebody I’m not, and I would never try to do that to her.

On what makes him a good husband: “I think you’ve got to be confident and a little bit of a pushover. Obviously, you’ve got to be a loyal person. I’m never going to listen to someone trash my wife. I think you have to be willing to take a bullet for somebody if you’re going to stand up there, take your vows, and be married to them for the rest of your life.”

On being the lone country voice on a panel of pop stars: “I remember sitting in this room and everyone [Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, & Adam Levine] was talking and laughing. I felt a little like the black sheep. It wasn’t until…about three days into production, when it was just the four of us sitting down together, that we clicked. It forced us to move out of our comfort zones. All of a sudden I was having conversations with people I had only read about in tabloids, and they’re just normal people. And they know who I am, and that I [was] getting married to Miranda, and they know who she is. It was surreal.”

On his past projects and learning process: “You gotta do the Dear Johns. You gotta do The Vow. I’m conscious about why I did those parts, those movies. I wanted to learn from Rachel on The Vow. I wanted to learn from Lasse Hallstrom on Dear John - he did The Cider House Rules and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. I didn’t go to acting school, so my knowledge of story, filmmaking, and character comes from just being on set and doing it. I know I’m not the best actor, but I hope my characters are getting better.”

On his future film aspirations: “I really don’t want to be in any more movies that I don’t produce. Unless it’s with one of the 10 directors that I really want to work with, I don’t have any interest in not being on the ground floor of creating it. But what I really want to do is direct.”

On his late nights, often until 4 a.m., brainstorming at the office: “Jenna’s not always happy when I come home that late, but I’ve just got to get it out.”

I’ve been criticized for being on both sides of the scale. It’s noise I block out automatically. I love my body. My boyfriend loooves my body. My son is healthy and happy, so that’s all that matters to me.”

On single motherhood: “It’s hard not having the consistency of a partnership on a daily basis. It’s a struggle. But I can’t single out my ex-husband [as the problem] because he’s a devoted father and great with my son. We always make sure that we put Max first. I have help from family and good people around me in support of my career. I couldn’t do what I do without a strong team behind me.”

On her fears: “I used to think that what scared me was the idea of being abandoned until someone said to me, ‘Only children can be abandoned. Adults can’t be abandoned because we have a choice. What’s the underlying thread that really scares me?’ I think what scares me is not having the courage to reach my full potential.”
