  • Davao’s Southshield Football Club Takes 3rd Place In 11th Del Monte Football Cup In Bukidnon

    The decision of Southshield Football Club to join the prestigious 11th Del Monte Football Cup in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, Philippines last April 9 and 10 has been rewarded.

    The members and coaches of Southshield Football Club are all smiles after their team won two third place trophies in the recently concluded 11th Del Monte Football Cup in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon last April 9 and 10.

    This developed after the team who are mostly made up of students from Southpoint School in Barangay Maa, Davao City won two third place trophies in the national football tournament. The under nine and under 11 divisions of Southshield FC won trophies in the soccer tournament participated in by 200 soccer teams across the Philippines.

    The under nine division of Southshield FC beat Higala Football Club of Cagayan de Oro City in a thrilling 3-1 penalty shoot-out. Southshield FC players Mariano Abella, Rhryan Jamisola-Dordas and defender Charles Kenn Chiu scored the decisive penalty goals for the team in their heart-pounding win.

    The under 11 division of Southshield FC for their won their trophy without any sweat after their supposed opponent was disqualified after one of its players was discovered to be over-aged. The three coaches of Southshield namely Greg Napuran, Junard Pinonggan and Angelo John Adana are very happy since their almost everyday practice prior to the tournament at their soccer field in Datu Loho, Maa has yielded positive results.

    Some of the members of the Southshield soccer team that competed in Bukidnon are Bob Benedict Braceros, Karl Sumampong, Charles Kenn Chiu, Zyk Lopez, Rhyan Gabrielle Jamisola Dordas, Kristoff Madrid, Devon Kierulf, Adrian Elarmo, Rhian Mendoza, Aaron Pelonio, Jian Matthew Goyonan, Jose Nuenay, Mariano Abella, Jared Distancia, Luiz Digman, Raymond Pahuyo, John Morales, Earl Sison, Hendrich Denilla, Simone Guerrero, Karlos Donado, James Gamite, Kevin Sayon and Jan Pritz Llubit.

    Miami Heat Remains Confident Despite End Of Long Winning Streak

    The Miami Heat had already moved on after their 27-game winning streak was recently ended by the Chicago Bulls.(bleacherreport.com)

    The long and record-setting 27 game-winning streak might have ended but the Miami Heat remains confident and focused in the on the ongoing National Basketball Association season.

    The Heat are dead serious in retaining their championship this year against tough NBA opponents from the entire league. Heat superstar guard Dwayne Wade said although they are sad that they did not get the record for the longest winning streak in the NBA at 33 games, the team remain happy with their achievement as the second longest winning streak in the NBA.

    Wade said they are now ready to moved on and focused on defending their NBA championship this year. The superstar guard said winning 27 games in row is an awesome feat and the team are very happy they were able to accomplish it.     No More Head-gears For Male Amateur Boxers In June

    The use of head-gear in amateur boxing will be banned starting in June.(online.wsj.com)

    To protect amateur boxers competing around the world against physical harm, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) is set to ban in June the use of head-gears among amateur boxers worldwide.

    AIBA said the lack of headgear would reduce the risk of concussion among amateur boxers. AIBA explained that boxers won’t hit their opponent’s head so hard if it’s not protected by a headgear. The governing body of amateur boxers around the world also said that head-gears also obscure peripheral vision, making it harder to see when a blow is being aimed at the side of the head.

    The AIBA clarified that the rule on applies among male amateur boxers and not on women amateur boxers. The AIBA made the new rule after the research they made on 15,000 boxers, half of whom had competed with headgear and half without. Based on their research AIBA discovered that in the 7,352 rounds that took place with boxers wearing headgear, the rate of concussion was 0.38 per cent, compared with 0.17 per cent per boxer per round in the 7,545 rounds without headgear.     If the Miami Heat is the hottest team in the National Basketball Association today, it is safe to say that the Denver Nuggets is the second top team in the NBA today.

    This developed after the Nuggest stretched their winning streak to 14 games after defeating the visiting Philadelphia Sixers 101-100. The 14th victory for the Nuggets is very sweet since the team is behind by as much as five points with 10 seconds left in the game before Nuggets forward Corey Brewer miraculously carry his team to victory.     The road towards their bid for a repeat as a champion team is getting clearer for the Miami Heat.

    The Heat is now the hottest team in the National Basketball Association after the team’s recent 102-93 win against the struggling Philadelphia Sixers team at home 102-93. Playing in-front of their fans, the Heat played with high octane energy to beat the Sixers and take their 17th straight wins in the current NBA season.

    According to reports, the 17-game winning streak is the longest streak this NBA season.     The struggling Phoenix Suns with a lowly 20-39 win-loss record surprisingly defeated the NBA leading San Antonio Spurs 105-101 at the home-floor of the latter. Playing loose with nothing to lose and everything to gain, the Suns played like a well oiled machine and defeated the veteran laden Spurs team in San Antonio.

    Suns veteran center Jermaine O’Neal took charge in scoring for the visiting Suns in their win with a magnificent 22 points and 13 rebounds performance.     Celtics veteran power-forward Kevin Garnett revealed to the media that he is not keen on joining the Los Angeles Clippers in a potential trade. Garnett said he will not lift the no-trade clause in his contract just to facilitate his trade to the Clippers this year.

    He revealed that when he signed his three-year, $36 million extension with the Celtics in the off-season he had no intention of leaving the team since he wanted to retire as a member of the Celtics.
