Now that the National Football League lockout is over it’s all system go for the next season of the top professional football league in the planet.
Once the new officially starts, the Indianapolis Colts is expected to perform well since it already signed its top player quarterback Peyton Manning to a five-year $90 million deal. Based on the new deal, the Colts are expected to pay Manning $69 million of his contract in the next three years starting this year.
Colts owner Jim Irsay said the team is very happy to have the four-time Most Valuable Player on its fold probably until the end of his NFL playing career. “Signing Peyton was a top priority for this organization and we are thrilled that the deal is complete,” Irsay said.
Manning for his part is very happy with his new deal and thank the Colts for the trust and confidence and he promised to do his best to bring them the championship bacon. He holds the record for most NFL MVP awards with four.
He was drafted by the Colts as the first overall pick in 1998 after a standout college football career with the Tennessee Volunteers. He is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning and the older brother of current New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
Manning holds NFL records for consecutive seasons with 4,000 or more yards passing and the most total seasons with 4,000 or more yards passing in a career. Manning holds the sixth highest career passer rating (94.9) in NFL history and the highest single-season passer rating (121.1 in 2004).
He is the all-time Colts franchise leader in career wins, career passing yards, pass attempts, pass completions, and passing touchdowns. In 2009, he was listed by The Sporting News as the No. 1 player in the NFL today. Also in 2009, Fox Sports named him player of the decade.
Irsay hoped that with Manning’s guidance the Colts will perform well and hopefully take the NFL crown this year. According to reports, the new deal signed by Manning is considered a bargain price and allows the team to sign more quality players to make its team even more stronger for the next NFL season.
The Colts have already re-signed two key veterans — safety Melvin Bullitt and kicker Adam Vinatieri — this week. They also lost linebacker Clint Session to Jacksonville in free agency. They reportedly also signed running back Joseph Addai, shortly after Manning’s deal was announced.
Addai would be a major help because he’s the best blocking back Indy has. That leaves left tackle Charlie Johnson and defensive tackle Dan Muir as the next big ticket items. They still have not signed their first three draft picks, either, tackles Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana or defensive tackle Drake Nevis.
