Despite what most people say, camping is not the most luxurious experience in the world. However, the Opera camper has been able to infuse the luxurious experience to camping. Simply put, Axel has been able to create a comfortable bedroom that moves around with you; wherever you go and when you are ready to turn in for the night.

The portable foldout trailer is Axel Enthoven’s creative innovation, which is inspired by the Sydney Opera House.  Rob Vos, who developed the camper, explained “It folds out of the trailer in minutes, revealing a sleek interior that includes hot and cold running water, a toilet, a simple stove, a wine cabinet and an espresso bar. As well as two luxury beds that slide together at the push of a button. And an enclosed teak veranda.”

Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging Trail In London

    15. November 2011

Many years have been passed after the development of the electric vehicles. Since then, the engineers are trying to improve the charging technology because the drivers have to wait for a long time to connect their vehicles for charging, if there are a large number of vehicles in the queue to be charged from the usual charging stations. However, it is a matter of great hope that the trial of the first electrical vehicle wireless charging technology will take place in London, United Kingdom, next year, according to the reports.

The innovative wireless charging technology will help the drivers to charge their vehicles by parking over an electric charging pad without the help of any charging cable. The telecom firm Qualcomm, in partnership with the UK government and Transport for London (TfL) is going to start the new technology’s pre-commercial trail from the beginning of 2012 that involves at least 50 electric vehicles in East London. Qualcomm purchased the technology from HaloIPT.

“I am determined to make London the electric car capital of Europe, helping to deliver cleaner air for the Capital, cutting emissions and improving the quality of life for people in the Capital. Source London has already opened electric driving up to more motorists and using this fantastic new technology is essential if we are to go further and reach my vision of helping the Capital become a zero-emission city,” said Boris Johnson, the mayor of London.

The new wireless charging system obviously will be helpful to the divers because it eliminates the plug-in-cable making an easier charging system. The researchers of the Auckland University, New Zealand, mainly developed the wireless charging procedure. It is really a happy news for the people of London as they would be able to acquire a green city within a few years.

Drugs Delivery Device For Tumor Treatment To Be Developed

    13. November 2011

Researchers are now developing a new drug delivery device for tumor treatment. (Photo: neopharmaasia.com)

The foremost reason tumor in the human body is the abnormal production of the tissues and generally caused by genetic transformations. There are many medicine and operation procedure in the recent world to cure tumors. The researchers of Sheffield University and the Oxford University have started a new project to develop a miniature device that can be used as a drugs provider to the tumors. The researchers of the University of Wisconsin Madison and Cornell University are also working on this project.

According to the researchers, the miniature devices could be able to provide the drugs to a specific spot in the body if the magnets are implanted properly near the targeted spot with the application of external magnetic field. The lead researcher of the project, Ebbens, said, “A drug-delivery system that can find its own way to the targeted site can potentially be administered as a conventional drug, without any additional intervention required.”

However, the success of the treatment will be dependent on the propagation speed of the magnetic fields to the targeted spot through the liquid environments of our body. To overcome this drawback and to get successful results, the researchers are working to create a shape-changing miniature device using the concept of hydrogels, which would be able to change the shape according to the liquid environments.

“The ultimate goal is to use a material that can respond to a protein or other biological marker produced by a tumor. The device would then follow these biological ‘breadcrumbs’ to reach the tumor,” said Ebbens. Following these markers, when the device would be able to detect the spot then it would be triggered to deliver the drugs to the tumor.

There is no doubt that the new device for delivering drugs would be cost effective procedure for tumor treatment, as it needs less instruments and other materials. The team has started the research in September 2011 and received about $14.4M as a fund from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

    Nano-SIM: World’s Smallest SIM Card

    12. November 2011

The world’s smallest SIM cards. (Photo: vipsaloti.com)

Many android developers and SIM-card vendors including Apple have been trying to create a SIM card that is smaller than the already existing Micro-SIM used in the iPhone 4. Recently, a German company, Giesecke & Devrient, has launched the world’s smallest SIM card called Nano-SIM.

The company, that started SIM cards commercially 20 years ago, is going to exhibit the Nano-SIM card publicly at CARTES & IDentification 2011 trade show in Paris starting on November 15, 2011. The length and width of the SIM card is approximately 12 millimeters and 9 millimeters, respectively, which is about 30 percent smaller than the Micro-SIM. Not only the lengths and widths but also the thickness had been reduced by about 15 percent, according to the news release of Giesecke & Devrient.

Besides, the Nano-SIM is about 60 percent thinner than the SIM used usually by the mobile operators. The SIM cards are expected to be built using the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) by the end of 2011. G&D is now testing the SIM cards for different mobile network operators.

The use of the Nano-SIM will obviously reduce the space used for the SIM. G&D claims that the new SIM cards will be very helpful for the manufacturers as they can utilize the extra space to implant other components such as additional memory cards or larger battery. The most important advantage of the Nano-SIM is that it will help manufacturer to create thinner mobile phone devices.

The Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division, Axel Deininger, said, “The invention of the SIM card remains a milestone in the history of G&D. With the Nano-SIM, we have shown how this development can move closer to perfection.”

According to the Moor’s law, in every two years the integration density will be doubled in the VLSI devices. The company proved that by developing such a thin SIM card. The company is expecting to launch the SIM cards commercially with the proper mobile phone devices by eve of the next year.

Blood-Testing Device For Astronauts Being Developed

    11. November 2011

ESA is developing a blood-testing device for astronauts in space. (Photo: enterprise-ireland.com)

In the space, the astronauts can not call a doctor or go to a diagnostic center instantly when needed. The astronauts need to identify their illness very quickly, if they feel uncomfortable, so that they can take the proper medicines. Blood test is the most commonly used and the fastest way to diagnose diseases of  patients. The European Space Agency (ESA) is going to develop a new blood testing device for the International Space Station (ISS) that will be able to diagnose some potential infections and diseases in the astronauts’ body in space, according to the news release of ESA.

The device that is under construction is a very small disc embedded with a wide range of ‘reduced test procedures.’ Using only a single drop of blood, the upcoming device can detect the health problems of the astronauts correctly within a few minutes. It is announced that the new blood testing device would be able to determine the health conditions of the astronauts including diabetes, heart disease, liver and kidney fail and provide the results on the spot.

ESA’s director of Human Spaceflight and Operations, Nadine Fritz, said, “Biochemical analysis aboard the Space Station is becoming a high priority for the human physiology experiments carried out there.” He added, “The retirement of the Space Shuttle has significantly reduced the amount of cargo we can download from the Station, so it makes sense to do what analysis we can do in orbit.”

ESA signed a contract with Irish company Radisens Diagnostics on October 28, 2011, for the development of the blood-testing device that is capable of working satisfactorily in ‘weightlessness’. The Ireland’s Minister for Research & Innovation Sean Sherlock expressed pleasure and said that it is inspiring for the company, to make an innovative device like blood testing device for the ESA.

The CEO of Radisens Diagnostics, Jerry O’Brien, said, “Winning this contract from ESA is a significant endorsement of our ‘sample-to-answer’ device and the breadth of blood tests it can offer.” Though the device is very small, it is very essential for the astronauts who feel uneasy while boarding on the space shuttle because then they need not to take any medicine without knowing the reason of illness.

The death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is indeed as great loss to humanity since a latest study has shown that the name Steve Jobs is considered the most used name in media for 2011.

Based on the study made by Global Language Monitor it was also learned that citations for Jobs is greater by 30 percent than the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden who was killed by American forces while hiding in Pakistan. Jobs, 56 earlier died last month after an eight-year battle with cancer.

Paul JJ Payack, president of Global Language Monitor explained their selection this year reflect the ongoing political and economic uncertainty of countries around the world. Jobs previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of the Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney.

Earlier, the late Apple Chief Operating Officer (CEO) Steve Jobs created more public attention after he predicted that United States president Barrack Obama will just be a one-term president. According to reports, when Jobs met Obama in 2010, he bluntly told the president that will not win his re-election bid.

Jobs said Obama will not get a second term in his presidential post due to the pervasive anti-business climate in his administration. Jobs cited excessive federal regulations and operating costs for businesses as harmful legacies of the Obama White House.

Despite the revelation of Jobs, which can be found in his soon to be released biography penned by Walter Isaacson, Obama and his supporters are very confident he can win re-election next year. Based on the latest political survey in the US, despite the ailing economy of America, Obama still takes a slim lead against his possible Republican rivals.

Health Monitoring Sensor System In The Vehicle Steering

    08. November 2011

Sensors integrated in the vehicle steering can help monitor the health condition of the driver. (Photo: blog.caranddriver.com)

A number of factors are responsible for the occurrence of many road accidents every year all over the world. Vehicle design, speed of the vehicle, road design, environment, drivers aspects are the top listed factors. A statistics says that about 60 percent traffic collision occurs because of drivers’ skills and drivers’ health conditions. It is obvious that with a bad condition of health, a driver can not control the steering properly. Recently, a team of researchers has developed a sensor system integrated in the steering of the vehicle that can sense the health condition of the drivers.

The steering is capable to monitor minor health conditions of the driver while driving including inception of heart attacks and fainting spells. During driving, the steering monitors various factors of human health including heat rate, oxygen saturation and electric conductance of the skin using two sensors integrated into the steering. The sensors use infrared light to the fingers to measure these aspects, so the fingers should be in contact with the sensors always. The collected data is then transferred to a micro-controller that transforms the electric signal to show on the information system display of the vehicle.

The lead researcher of the project, D’Angelo, said, “Our biggest challenge was embedding the sensors… and programming them to read out the results without relying on a PC. There aren’t commercially available sensors for blood pressure that are non-invasive. There is also still a lot of work to do on detecting if someone is really about to faint.”

The researchers are still working on the project to develop such a system that could block phone calls, turning down the volume of the radio, turning on hazard lights, reducing vehicle speed or emergency braking. D’Angelo believes that it is possible to integrate more sensors that can be used for other purposes. However, according to D’Angelo, the debuted system is easier than the past, which was conducted to integrate sensors into the seat.

The researchers of the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) along with BMW have developed the new sensor system in vehicle steering. We wish that the system would reduce the death and disability as well as financial costs to both the individual and society due to the traffic collision.
